Back at the Old Stand again for the second spasm of "Weekend Wogan", standing room only and a crowd lightly sprinkled with perspiration (if we ever get a really warm Sunday, the BBC Radio Theatre's going to be like the Monkey House at the Zoo) but eagerly awaiting the myriad delights of rockin' Elio Pace and his Jazzers, the ageless wit and charms of Des O'Connor, the Hollywood pizazz of Jeff Goldblum and the musical beauty of Nerina Pallot. Boy, did they ever get their money's worth!
Des fooled around as only he can and then reminded us why he has sold millions of records and topped the charts, when people actually went out and bought records... Jeff Goldblum star of "Independence Day", "The Fly", and currently "Law and Order" on TV, brought the house down with an impromptu session on Elio's joanna. How Pace's jazzers loved that. And to top it all, the lovely voice and stunning song-writing talent of Nerina Pallot. The Old Man of The Sea, fresh from splicing the mainbrace on the Togs Voyage, "Salty" Boggy Marsh, joined in the airy banter and the uplifting moral tone of our regular "Janet and John" tale... Incidentally, Volume 5 of these simple homely tales has just been launched, "Clinging to the Wreckage". The CD costs £10.00 including post and packaging, and a minimum of that goes straight to "Children in Need". Previous "J and Js" have raised, literally, millions for the charity, help us do the same, nay, even better, with "Clinging to the Wreckage". Go now, to www.charitygoods.com and avoid disappointment.....
The only disappointment of last Sunday's"WW" was the marked lack of sustenance and provender. Without jelly-babies, rock buns, fairy cakes and other dainties, I can scarcely be expected to keep the band quiet, never mind the audience. And I need to keep up my strength... Don't forget to join us on the iPod and BBC TV's Red Button, we're on all week, just in case you don't believe what you heard on Radio 2. Last time out, we got over a million viewers... Don't have me putting on the make-up for nothing....
