Rising from the Ashes… and my bed of pain

I hope that those of you listening at home to "Weekend Wogan" on Radio 2 had as much fun as we did in the BBC Radio Theatre last Sunday, Valentines Day.

Thanks to an assembled multitude of Togs, Tygs and refugees from the Home for the Bewildered, the atmosphere was electric with excitement and anticipation, which was remarkable since most of the gang had been queueing in the bitter wind that blows around Broadcasting House since about 7.30 in the morning.

I arrived leaning heavily on a stick,to be greeted by Hellen Bach with a kiss and a bouquet of roses. Later on Sir Ian McKellen presented me with them again, and another kiss this time on the hand. I hope all this is not going to spoil me...

Sir Ian was a terrific guest, at ease, good-humoured, with the vim and vigour of a man half his age. He's never been out of work, and he has never stopped working ; as soon as he finished with me, he was off to the Theatre Royal, Haymarket for the Sunday matinee of "Waiting for Godot". How does he do it? I nearly fell asleep over lunch...

But "WW" is not a talk-show (incidentally, the Dutch for "talk-show" is "prat-show") it's Radio 2 music at it's best, on record and live as you like : Elio Pace his Band and Singers kick it off, and the dust never settles. The brilliant musical guests were Norah Jones and Jamie Cullum, playing and singing like things possessed, and topping it off with an unexpected blinding duet. As always and ever, my Togs letters supplied the wit; I'd have needed another couple of hours to have included them all. John "Boggy" Marsh had flown home from sailing around Cape Horn to warm the audiences cockles and add verisimilitude to a particularly moving tale of "Janet and John". Mick Sturbs, who writes these epics, was in the audience but made his escape before the crowd turned ugly... A great and lovely day, even if I say so myself, and hats off to "Barrowlands" Boyd, who put the extravaganza together. And now we've got to do it all again next Sunday morning, 11 to 1...

Among the first mail I received was one from Norman Macintosh to tell me that the Togs had raised the magnificent sum of £587,482 for "Children in Need" in 2009. Magnificent! Check it out on www.charitygoods.com

"Tyggy" Steels is relieved by my reappearance. She's dispensing with the WWS (Wogan Withdrawal Symptoms) patches... Mahatt Micoat used to be a TWIT (Terry Wogan Is Tops), spiralled downwards into Togdom, and now wants to join the SWOTS (Sunday Wogan On Two Society). My own favourite grouping was TWINKLETOES (Terry Wogan Is Not Kinky Like Everybody Thinks Or Everybody Says).

Cheery welcomes on all sides : Horatio Q. Birdbath : "I've missed "Workers Playtime", was that Violet Carson on the piano?" No, Elio Pace, though it's an understandable error. Anyway Violet Carson played the old joanna for Wilfred Pickles ("Give him the money Barney"), not Workers Playtime. Do try and keep up...

"'Tis the 14th of Feb, it's Valentines Day
And Wogan is back, let's shout Hooray!
Every Sunday Pee-em, we Togs will switch on
To Radio Two... Hope there's Janet and John"...

Your every whim, catered for....

Of course, there are some people who just don't get it... or do they ?....

"I have to say,I was shocked to hear that you're now going to be on the radio of a Sunday morn. Six days a week ! Exhausting. Mind you you're on a roll, so it's probably the right time to be stepping up a gear... Caught bits of your breakfast show lately, you've become a lot funnier since Christmas. And you've stopped putting on that silly Irish accent. Well done, but don't wear yourself out. Take a holiday soon...
P.S. The wife and I are looking forward to you camping it up on the old Eurovision again this year...."

Sometimes you wonder if it's worth going on......

Hellen Bach says:

We are so delighted to have you back , Sir Terry

Norman Macintosh says:

The show topped the Pilot and was great. The mix is just right, and 2 hours of entertainment that whizzes by far too quickly. It reminds me of what radio entertainment used to be like. Long may it continue.

Big Normski!

Colin Waite says:

I echo what Hellen says, its so good to hear your joviality again (following you on Farcebook and Twitter)

hilsofhove says:

Wonderful, and the show was too. It is lovely to have you back but do miss you in the mornings,it is not the same without you. Will be listening next Sunday.xx

Sir Blimely Windy says:

Wise move not to read out my email last Sunday – matron out me back in solitary for using the internet without permission. Must dash… the door is creaking

Edina Cloud says:

I enjoyed every minute of the fun and laughter. Can’t wait for next Sunday.

AHK says:

lovely to have you back, though too brief! Looking forward to next show.

Alan Whitehead says:

Wonderful, and better than any 2 hours entertainment you see on the box these days! Welcome Home Sir Terry!

Sal Monella says:

It was a wonderful morning – thank you Sir Terry.

I really do miss waking up with you by my side. If ever you change your mind about me, I’ll be here………waiting…..

Kissie kissie

Daxie says:

Listened to the show on the wireless, I had to keep twiddling the knob to keep it in tune, was worth it……loved the Janet and John story !!!!!

PeterO says:

@Daxie Were you tuned into the “Light Programme” ? It certainly sounded like the Light Programme :-)

sarah says:

Good to have you back Sir, at last, something to look forward to on a sunday evening (thanks to the i.playing thingy, and even better again on the website (where I caught the bits I missed on tinternet radio)
now be carefull on that little stage!
xx

B. Keeper says:

Your show was worth every penny that I spent on the ticket! It beat the usual box of chocs for Mrs. K’s Valentines Day gift.
Tremendous fun, and really good to see you in the flesh (although did I detect rather less than before Christmas?)

Dora Jarr says:

Good to have you back Terry and hope the knee’s sorted out for good now. xx

Luke Warm says:

Marvellous to have you back, Sir Terry, and so typical that as ever, you’re not one to go on about your pain and afflictions!

evanabove says:

Great show, Sir Terry, but using the walking stick for extra audience affection was a few steps too far….

Ava Laff says:

Brilliant to have you back Sir Tel – soooo miss you in the mornings but you have made Sundays perfect. Thanks

euterpe13 says:

Only 3 days to go now to the next extravaganza – the ironing is piling up in anticipation ( well, what else are you going to do whilst listening – drink?) , offspring and other variegated acquaintances have been warned not to call – and there will be nibbles & sherry at the end to celebrate another morning avoiding having to go out at all!

Millicent Grumble says:

Thoroughly enjoyed the show, the two hours flew by. The sort of show you would actually want to sit down and listen to while doing nothing else.

Beau Leggs says:

So this is not a Terry Towelling site. Yet another 10 minutes of my wasted life I’ll not be getting back.

Togmeister says:

Glad you liked the show, even though in continual pain I enjoyed it myself. Precious little sympathy I got…Next Sunday I’ll throw away the crutches, and collapse on the floor…I’ll bet you’ll laugh…Thanks Hells for the roses, and Eddi for the chocolate hearts and everybody else there for their welcome. I hope that Mexican Wave wasn’t because you were bored….

Mother Souperior , Sisters of Perpetual PMT says:

What worries me is, so many people have kept missing you.

What have they been throwing and why are they such poor shots if you can’t run yet?

Blessings xx

Fred Hart says:

The jingle used to open the show sounds very at home on Weekend Wogan! And The format of the programme works very well for me.

Judie Wilson aka Cat T. Person says:

We loved seeing you, and my non TOG husband is becoming more TOGgy by the day – thank you, and this week I am listening to you with my fur babies whilst doing an assignment on contract law

Togmeister says:

Once again, the faithful queued in the rain for the doubtful privilege of seeing Weekend Wogan.Undeterred, they clapped, cheered and laughed in all the right places, and the warmth of their reception for the old popinjay Boggy Marsh, would have touched me ,if I didn’t know the rascal better. And Barrowlands Boyd, scuttling back and forward to the stage with armfuls of mail, seems to bring out the maternal in the ladies. P.S. He’s unattached… Elio Pace with the Luton Girls Choir and his Strolling Vagabonds,Sharleen Spiteri and David Gray, can we top it next week? Just listen…Oh,and it’s the only time I’ve ever had a standing ovation for a radio show…Or for anything, actually….

Edina Cloud says:

Wasn’t lucky enough to get tickets on 21st,but had ear glued to radio,of course.
Watched highlights on Radio 2 website today.Glad to see no walking stick now,but still no provender!!

Reg Raggon says:

Remind me, who are you again??

Caroline says:

Good to have you back, i used to listen to you on my drive to work, usually in fits of laughter while you did your Janet and John sketch. i still can’t bring myself to listen to Chris Evans, Good luck and Good Health
